Antibacterial activity
Polymyxin B: effective against gram-negative (eg: P. aeruginosa)
Bacitracin: effective against a variety of gram-positive cocci and bacilli
Neomycin: effective against aerobic gram-negative/gram-positive bacillus, anaerobic coverage
Pregnancy Risk Factor
Class C
Contraindication/Precaution
Hypersensitivity to polymyxin B or bacitracin or neomycin or any component
Safety and effectiveness in children have not been established
Mechanism of Action
Polymyxin B: behave as cationic, surface-active compounds that disrupt the permeability of both the outer and the cytoplasmic membranes of gram-negative bacteria.
Bacitracin: inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis
Neomycin: interferes with bacterial protein synthesis by binding to 30S and 50S ribosomal subunits
