BACITRACIN

Antibacterial activity

Active against certain gram-positive organisms, such as streptococci, some strains of staphylococci, and pneumococci. It is ineffective against most gram-negative organisms.

Pregnancy Risk Factor

Class C

Contraindication/Precaution

Hypersensitivity to bacitracin or any component
Bacitracin in parenteral (intramuscular) therapy may cause renal failure due to tubular and glomerular necrosis.
Do not use in the presence of renal failure
Do not administer I.V.
Use caution in the presence of myasthenia gravis

<2.5 kg: 900 units/kg/day in 2-3 divided doses >2.5 kg: 1000 units/kg/day in 2-3 divided doses
Children: 
800-1200 units/kg/day div q8h

Oral:

Adults:
25,000 units PO qid

Topical:

Children and adults:
Apply 1-5 times/day

Ophthalmic: ointment

Children and adults:
apply 2-3 cm ( 1/4" to 1/2") ribbon OS/OD q3-4h  for 7-10 days
