PENICILLIN G BENZATHINE

Antibacterial Activity

Effective against gram-positive cocci
Effective against some gram-negative (eg. N. meningitis)
Effective against most anaerobe and spirochete
Used in the Tx of  T. pallidum infection
Use via IM (deep) injection only

Category B

Contraindication/Precaution

Hypersensitivity to penicillin G benzathine or any penicillins or any component
Not to be administered via IV lines/injections
Use caution with patient who are allergic to cephalosporin, they could have an hypersensibility to penicillins
Use caution if  seizure disorder
Use caution if impaired renal function or other nephrotoxic agents are used
Do not inject near an artery or a nerve

Mechanism of Action

Selective inhibitors of bacterial cell wall synthesis, by binding to penicillins binding proteins (PBP'S)

Metabolism: 
liver (partially)
Half-life: 
0.5 hour once the Rx as been release from the injection site
Elimination: 
excreted  in urine

Children:

Body weight < 27 kg 1 dose of 300 000-600 000 units IM Body weight > 27 kg
1 dose of 900 000 units IM

Adults: 

1 dose of 1.2-2 million units  IM
